Operation

Milk cooling by spraying ice water coolant fluid on the outer surface of the milk vessel.

As refrigerated ice water, provided from an integrated ice bank system is used; it is sprayed along the outside of the inner tank containing the milk. Milk cooling with ice water has advantages over the Direct Expansion (DX) cooling system:

Advantages

•Cooling from 35 C (entry temp. of milk) to 10 C occurs 50% faster and cheaper than Direct Expansion method (DX).

•The ice water intensively cools the milk without any risk of freezing, even with small volumes in the tank.

Materials

High quality stainless steel AISI 304.
Insulation is compact (CFC Free) polyurethane

Components

•iControl system – electronic control system for control of cooling, washing and agitation.

•The iControl system also has an alarm system to alerts of any irregularities.

•Refrigeration units – sized and built to meet Australian standards of cooling and also to meet harsh climatic conditions.

•High pressure cleaning system from a dynamic spray ball integrated in the agitator of the vat.

•Other usual standard components on a Packo vat include: adjustable legs, non return valve

•Compact integrated ice bank system makes the design space saving and ergonomic.

•Refer to vat features for more detail.

What is an “Ice Bank” (RMIB) Packo milk tank?

The Packo RM/IB Ice bank milk cooling tank is a vessel that is suspended over a bath or reservoir of chilled ice water. During the night on off peak power, small refrigeration compressors built ice water around layers of copper tubing that sits within the reservoir. Ice forms around the piping while the rest of the bath contains 0 degree water. When milk is placed within the inner tank water puThe Race to 4 Degreesmps spray the chilled ice water onto the inner thus cooling the milk.

During the day the ice water melts slowly and is re made during the night

The main advantages of Ice bank systems is the ability to capitalize on the off peak power which is used to build the ice. During the day no refrigeration is required on higher electrical rates as the ice water is pumped only via water pumps.

Also the farmer can use the ice water to circulate through a secondary heat exchanger (plate cooler), to lower in coming milk temperatures before entering the milk tank. A two fold advantage.

What is an “Ice Bank” (PIB / Compact)?-

The Packo PIB/Compact Ice bank is a system that works under the same principle as the RM/IB Packo milk cooling tank. The difference is that the PIB/Compact does not have the inner vessel that holds the milk. In affect the PIB/Compact is not a milk cooling tank.

It usage is for the building of ice water and the holding of ice water just like the RM/IB tank. Connections fitted to the PIB/Compact allow for the ice water to be pumped to another milk cooling vessel like the Packo REM/DIB or the LEM/DIB. This ice water then enters the cooling plates (evaporator) which is used to cool the milk within the tank.

The other main advantage with the PIB/Compact system is that its role can be used in industry and other commercial situations. Many industries require cooling of equipment via chilled water, things just like the Packo batch Pasteurisers for example. These compact PIB systems come ready for connection to refrigeration compressors and simple connections required of out going and in coming water from the equipment to be cooled.
